FR&GC Pollinator Committee Work Day

The [Falmouth Rod & Gun Club] Pollinator Committee work day on May 14 was among our most productive work  days.  The weather cooperated, it started off overcast and warm and then becoming partly sunny.  We had 19 scouts and adult leaders from troop 42 with one large power post hole auger joining 6 club members for the work day.  A big thank you to troop 42 for their eager and enthusiastic participation in the work day.  They really made it happen – digging holes in an area full of old tree roots, amending the planting holes with compost and watering the newly planted shrubs.  A lot of work in 2 hours time.
We planted over 100 mostly native shrubs along the north edge of the apple field.  This shrub transition zone between the meadows and the woods should greatly improve our wildlife habitat by providing host plants for pollinators and food, cover and nesting sites for birds and small wildlife.  The shrubs we planted included viburnums, dogwood shrubs, chokeberries, ninebark, beach plum, wild plum, grey birch, witch hazels, fragrant sumac, serviceberry, Carolina allspice, American filbert, Spirea and St. Johns wort.
The plants were provided by generous donations from the Friends of the Mashpee Wildlife Refuge and Don Clarke plus purchases made by the Club.  The plant material in 3 gallon, 2 gallon and quart size pots were obtained at wholesale from Mahoney’s, Sylvan Nursery, Chief River, Cold Stream Farm and the New Hampshire State Nursery.
