Vote Yes for Clean Water

As a Mashpee resident, we urge you to please Vote YES on Article 4 at Town Meeting on May 4 and Vote YES on Question 3 at the Town Election on May 9th.

What are Article 4 and Ballot Question 3?
Article 4 and Ballot Question 3 allocate $12 million for designing Phase 3 of the wastewater facility and collection system in Waquoit Bay, aiming to sewer 1,050 homes and reduce 30% of nitrogen from entering the watershed. Phase 3 will also prevent phosphorus, a major cause of recent cyanobacteria blooms, from sewered homes reaching John’s and Ashumet ponds and will minimize nutrient pollution in the Quashnet River.

Why is it important?
Waquoit Bay has suffered significant damage from nitrogen in groundwater due to septic systems. In the Waquoit watershed, John’s and Ashumet Ponds are similarly impaired by phosphorus from septic systems, and the Quashnet River continues to be impacted by nutrient loading.

Centralized wastewater treatment is the single, most effective way to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus from polluting bay and ponds in the Waquoit watershed.

Article 4 and Question 3 represent Mashpee’s first step in implementing Phase 3, a treatment facility and a wastewater collection system to improve water quality in the Waquoit Bay watershed.
