Rachel, Carson, and young Oscar are gone for the season, but other creatures can be seen on the nest while they winter down South. Most of the activity is at night, with Great Horned Owls bringing their prey to the nest, and an occasional raccoon or squirrel also provide entertainment. They are fascinating to watch, and it’s possible the owls may remain on the nest to breed over the winter, an occurrence that has happened on other nest platforms in the past. As interesting as that would be, it would pose a conflict with the ospreys when they return in March. We hope it doesn’t end in a battle over the nest. Both owls and ospreys are formidable protectors of their territory.
